This past Saturday, Minneapolis based band After The Burial came to tear it up at Wooly’s in Des Moines, Iowa. It was a night of people packed in a sweaty club and people craving a great night of metal music.
It was a night where the sub-genres of metal were also highlighted during this tour. Tragic Hero Records band Invent, Animate took the stage! At first, they seemed a bit out of place for opening up the “Carry The Flame” tour with a band that is known for its sweeping guitar solos and intense breakdowns, however, Invent, Animate did a great job of trying to engage the audience. Admittingly so, it was a tough night for them, although they did have their niche for an audience. Their ambiance and screaming vocal styles brought me back to the Underoath days. Overall, a quality set from Invent, Animate.
The band that stole the night took the stage next. The band was Fit For An Autopsy. They took their doom, almost sludgy type of metal and stole the night. They were born to command a stage as is evident in the tracks “Flatlining” and “Heads Will Hang”. Heads were banging, circle pits were ensuing, and even a wall of death commenced during Fit For An Autopsy’s set. They brought the darkness to Wooly’s in Des Moines.
Fit For A King was next to take the stage. You will get to check out my interview with Ryan Kirby, the vocalist for Fit For A King in the coming week! We had a pleasant conversation about Christianity, music, and even bits of philosophy in the interview. I can’t wait for you all to read it! Fit For A King brought the light to the night at Wooly’s, while incorporating that light with sick breakdowns and a commanding stage presence. The audience was especially engaged when they belted out their metal hit “Dead Memory”, which features Jake Luhrs of August Burns Red. I strongly suggest you pick up “Deathgrip” by Fit For A King, it is a raw and fantastic record.
Emmure was next to take the stage. You can tell that there was an audience to see Emmure and an audience to see After The Burial. Emmure brought the slam with rap-core influences to their music. The audience was especially engaged during their staple cuts entitled “Solar Flare Homicide”, “A Gift A Curse”, and “Flag of the Beast”. After we all know that everyone but the vocalist, Frankie Palmeri quit the band in 2015, Palmeri seemed to have smoothly transitioned to his new bandmates.
After The Burial were the last band to take the stage! Talk about a killer set and to show who dominated the night! They are just heavy as all get out, sweeping guitar solos and massive breakdowns are evident that After The Burial is probably one of the tightest bands out there from a musicianship standpoint. Just a fantastic set packed with emotion especially after their tragic loss of their guitarist, Justin Lowe, who was found dead in Somerset, Wisconsin.
