This past Friday, Carter Hulsey with special guest American Opera both play a rather unique set at The Whiskey House Bar and Grill in Ankeny, Iowa. First of all, the show was free, secondly the show was in a restaurant atmosphere. As a rocker, it has truly been a long time since I have seen a dinner show. A person can get steak while enjoying some music.
Carter Hulsey and American Opera swapped songs, shared the stage, and exchanged some unique stories on the meanings behind the songs that they penned. During the sets, you can feel the mutual admiration for one another as they would perform their songs. They both have contrasting styles in their music, as American Opera is more of the crowd that listens to Alison Weiss or This Wild Life, acoustic singer/songwriter music with a punk twist. Forthcoming, you will get to see an interview with American Opera in regards to their upcoming record entitled “Small Victories”. I am looking forward to that record.
Carter Hulsey has a contrasting style from American Opera in the sense that his style has more of a folk/country-rock twist to it. It is easy to see why Carter Hulsey has been involved in as many showcases as he has been involved in and including an NPR performance that is becoming a viral hit on YouTube.
