So right out the gate it must be stated that most bands usually give in to label and or commercial pressures to change their sound in an attempt to gain a wider amount of success or more commonly known as “selling out”. If that is what you are looking for in a band stop reading any further into this article because I promise you, Dying Fetus has NEVER conformed past the boundaries of the brutal sound they have crafted and honed since 1991!  On June 23rd, Dying Fetus released “Wrong One To Fuck With” via Relapse Records.
Formed in Marlboro, Maryland, the band’s current line up consists of Sean Beasley on bass guitar, Trey Williams on drums and original founding member John Gallagher on guitar and vocals. Even though the band has gone through several different changes as far as members, the current line up has been together for ten years with the latest addition of their drummer. This history really shines on their latest album, Wrong Person To Fuck With and proves you DO NOT want to mess with these guys! What can I say, their sound is absolutely as brutal as the cover of their new album which features a person (obviously the person the album title is referring to) holding a machete in one hand and the severed head of his victim in the other in gory fashion. But if you judge a book, or in this case a cd, by its cover you will totally underestimate the complexity and skill level it took to craft music of this nature. Sure it is not for the faint of heart and the vocals sound like John is drawing bile from the depths of his stomach to achieve this intensely guttural annunciations, but there has been so much thought and talent put in to create such extreme music.
“Fixated on Devastation” starts out with 32nd note drum fills and lead guitar runs that are the in your face assault that is pure Dying Fetus! Then, the song goes from blasts to half times to heavy break downs all while including an amazing bass riff by Sean. Another notable track was “Panic Amongst the Herd” which starts off brutal but then goes into an anthemic groove before taking your head off with blast beats and guitar runs that make playing “Flight of the Bumblebee” look like “Hot Cross Buns”. Track 5 is a favorite of mine titled “Seething with Disdain”. It is a speed demon’s paradise! If you enjoy hearing complex rhythms at breakneck speeds, coupled with tempo changes coming at you like a teenager learning how to drive a stick shift for the first time look no further! The guitars shred so unbelievably fast that is surprising that the fret boards didn’t up and catch on fire. And even if you had Kevlar earplugs it wouldn’t stop the proverbial machine gun-type assault the drums have aimed at your brain. Couple all that with the deep vocals layered over the top that almost seem like they would be achieved by a 90 year old smoker and you have an underground music lovers paradise.
Dying Fetus WILL strike a nerve in you with their latest installment and do not seem to be slowing down in the near future to which I hope they never do because that is what allows them to live up to their name. Let’s face it, you do not expect to hear a “Backstreet Boys” sound from a band called Dying Fetus and that is the beauty of this group. You put this on and expect to be mentally shredded all the while headband ingredients and hoping the pieces don’t fall out through the orifices in your skull. They are one of the pioneers in this genre and even though they have not given in to a commercial sound there is definitely a reason why they have received some commercial success.
