Editor’s Note: Big props to Sal for the review that he wrote up for Dying Fetus. Here he is with his first interview for Madness To Creation as he sits down with Trey Williams, who is the blast beat drum-god behind the operation known as Dying Fetus. Fans can pick up “Wrong One To Fuck With” wherever music is sold and check out Dying Fetus on the Summer Slaughter tour near you before they embark on a European tour this fall and winter. Without further delay, here is our interview with Trey Williams, drummer for Dying Fetus.
Sal: One thing that we appreciate is not conforming to the trends, what keeps you staying true to the music?
Trey: Dying Fetus only does one thing, and that is playing death metal. No gimmicks or trends are worth betraying yourself, and your fans. We do this because we love it. And I can’t think of any band that followed a trend that benefited them in the long run. They always tend to regret following.
Sal: Give us a day in the life of the writing process for a Dying Fetus song.
Trey: We would gather at our rehearsal space around 11am. Then the John or Sean will purge any ideas they had into the computer. We would stay in there for about 7-9 hours a day for about 7 months.
Sal: Tell us about The Summer Slaughter Tour, what can fans expect?
Trey: A whole day of sweating and brutality. We will be playing new and old material that we hope gets the crowd raging.
Sal: What primary differences are there between playing a headlining tour and playing on a festival like Summer Slaughter?
Trey: On a headliner, we can choose more songs that show our whole discography. And on a Summer Slaughter like tour we need to pick just the bad ass songs. That way we make the best impression for the short set time.
Sal: You all are also touring Europe late fall/early winter. What is the difference between playing in front of American audiences and playing in front of European audiences?
Trey: The real difference is accents. Metal fans all over the world have kicked ass for and with is everywhere we go. But Europe in general is more accepting of live rock music. America is so saturated with pop and hip hop that it just doesn’t seem cool to the kids. That doesn’t mean that we like one more than the other. I’m just saying that Europe appreciates music more.
Sal: What was the inspiration behind the album cover?
Trey: The title needed a intensely detailed cover. We tried some other ideas. It the final cover is what stuck. There was no story to go with the cover art, just brutality. We did want a realistic cover like descend into depravity had.
Sal: If you could play with any band that you haven’t played with yet, who would you tour with?
Trey: Mac Sabbath! Naah, for real we don’t really care. If Any of the big bands want to take us out we will consider the offer.
Sal: Favorite gig to play and why?
Trey: Club shows. They always turn into a war zone or party.
Sal: How long does it take to write a complex song?
Trey: The tech parts seem to be the easiest to write for John and Sean. The grooves are the ones we really mill over. But each come comes together in its own time. Some come quick, others are more of a struggle.
Sal: Thank you for your time!
Trey: Thank you!
