After recently seeing their set when they opening for The Acacia Strain during their one-off show before embarking on the Vans Warped Tour, I became further intrigued with this band. It was an intense live show that was highly engaging for the packed house at the Vaudeville Mews. This band is known as Katastrophes Tomb, and on July 21st, they have released their EP entitled “1711” via Reverb Nation, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud.
Katastrophes Tomb is composed of Vincent Venn on vocals, Taylor Soloman on drums, Brian Lundy on guitars, Curtis Coleone on bass, and Joe Youngbear on guitars. This year alone, Katastrophes Tomb has shared the stage with the likes of the aforementioned The Acacia Strain, Flaw, Psychostick, Motograter, Mushroomhead, Madame Mayhem, and American Head Charge. They also tapped the services of John Ira at Sound The Slaughter Studio for production, mixing, and mastering of this EP.
“1711” starts off with an “Intro”. The “Intro” does what an introduction should do on a record or an EP, and that is build the anticipatory setting, it has a gentle guitar with a somewhat menacing voiceover before it transitions into the hard-hitting track entitled “Bloodlust”. Listeners will immediately notice how the guitars are groove-oriented, pack a heavy punch coupled with a rhythm section that is chocked full of heavy-laden grooves and a voice that mixes rapcore, screams, and clean singing by Vincent Venn. It is a solid way to keep “1711” going. “1711” transitions into “Honeydick”, the cymbal crashing is reminiscent of the song “Blind” by Korn albeit a brief moment and kudos to Curtis for providing a thundering bass for the track. The vocals and guitars are reminiscent of a Disturbed meets a 40 Below Summer type of sound. “Devil” is definitely the hardest hitting track on the album. It represents rapcore elements combined with the chaotic screams and vocals that are pretty influenced by Serj of System Of A Down.
Overall, if you’re looking for a band that is looking to bring back groove metal, mixed with rap/screamcore elements, with a bit of a nu-metal vibe, then check out “1711” by Katastrophes Tomb. It does what an EP is meant to do, and that is introduce the world to a band while whetting the appetite for even more Katastrophes Tomb. I came into this with no expectations, and left with quite positive thoughts for the production of the EP and for the angst-filled tracks that are represented in this band. Katastrophes Tomb should tear up the Midwest scene from here on out. Go pick this up!
