Editor’s Note: Out of Gothenburg, Sweden is a band that has been around for 30 years, yet no album has been released. Until Now! On October 20th, Ice Age has unleashed the appropriately titled “Breaking The Ice” worldwide via GMR Music. This band, up until 1990, sold thousands of demos, however, issues in the music industry caused Ice Age to break apart. Interest in the Scandinavian market never waned, so much so that Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax all dedicated “The Big Four” show at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden to Ice Age. Ice Age knew that they had to press on. In this interview, vocalist Sabrina Kihlstrand discusses the Big Four and what fans can expect from “Breaking The Ice”. Without further delay, here is Madness To Creation’s conversation with Sabrina Kihlstrand of Ice Age.
M.T.C.: Ice Age has been around for 30 years, yet never released an album. What sorcery did you use to get noticed after all of these years?
Sabrina: We were never really forgotten during these years believe it or not. We have had so many requests for a reunion show, from labels wanting to release our demos etc. But after we actually did the reunion show in 2015 it was such great fun that we decided to continue and of course an album only came natural after this. It was worth the wait don’t you think?
M.T.C.: Describe Ice Age in a comparison/contrast with the actual Ice Age of this earth and your band.
Sabrina: We hope to create about the same impact on heavy metal and thrash metal fans that the Ice Age of this earth actually created on earth!
M.T.C.: What can fans expect from “Breaking The Ice”?
Sabrina: If you are a metal fan who enjoy well composed, melodic riff-based, catchy heavy metal songs with a thrash metal edge you will love our album – this is what you can expect!
M.T.C.: What can fans expect from the band for the rest of 2017 onwards to 2018?
Sabrina: The rest of 2017 we are just doing a lot of promotion for the album but in 2018 its gigs! First off we have a tour in Sweden we call Triple Thrash Treat, together with the awesome Reignsaw (which I recommend you check out) and FKU. We also have some European dates planned in March/April.In the summer there will be festivals, so we will have a busy 2018!
M.T.C.: Reaction when the Big Four dedicated the Gothenburg, Sweden tour stop to Ice Age?
Sabrina: It felt very unrealistic – I was overwhelmed!
M.T.C.: Tell us about the Swedish music scene, how is it different from the American music scene?
Sabrina: I have to admit that I don’t keep a good check on the music scene here in general – and the American music scene I have even less knowledge of. I just started with music again after a long absence from it – and during these years I barely listened to music so I have a lot of catching up to do!
M.T.C.: Speaking of the Big Four: List your favorite album or song from each member of the Big Four:
Sabrina:
- Metallica: Ride The Lightning
- Megadeth: Rust In Peace
- Slayer: Reign In Blood
- Anthrax: Spreading The Disease
M.T.C.: Any singles to promote Breaking The Ice, and what was your favorite thing about releasing this record?
Sabrina: We have released the title track both as a single and as a video. For me the whole process of recording an album was a highlight. The technique is obviously so different then it was back when we recorded the demos. There were several “AHA” experiences all along the recording procedure but the greatest feeling must have been when we heard the first song final mixed. Wow – we were so pleased! Personally I never thought I would record an album so this is a bit of an unrealistic feeling it has finally happened.
