It was a decision that had to be done, seeing in my view, the greatest band in the world in Thrice.  I am so glad that they are back in full force with the Breckenridge brothers providing the rhythm section, Teppei on guitars, and Dustin Kensrue on vocals/guitars.  I absolutely was enthralled by their performance.  One knows that a band is absolutely amazing live when they don’t have to prompt the audience for anything, whether it’s moshing, clapping hands in unison, or crowdsurf, the crowd does it anyway!

I went as a fan to this performance, didn’t have to worry about making sure I’m at that interview on time or getting in the photo pit area, I was just there to enjoy some amazing music.  Thrice absolutely delivered at Wooly’s in Des Moines, Iowa!  There was little interaction between the band and the packed house(I want to say the venue holds between 750 and 1,000 people but I could be off) because Thrice wanted to get through as many songs through their diverse and extensive catalog as possible.  Old school and newer school Thrice fans were just as happy, the setlist ranged from old school Thrice such as “Deadbolt”, “The Artist And The Ambulance”, and “Silhouette”, to the experimental Vhiessu days such as the set opener “The Earth Will Shake” and “Of Dust And Nations”, to them going through a microcosm of the 10 year anniversary of The Alchemy Index by treating fans through “Firebreather”, “Open Water”, “Broken Lungs”, and “Come All You Weary”.  There was so much emotion and passion packed into their set.  The crowd was especially lit up for their single “Black Honey”, which will be a mainstream rock staple for years to come.

The two openers were Chon and Balance And Composure.  Chon brought a unique flair to the night.  The instrumentals were certainly atmospheric, heavily influenced by jazz, but definitely didn’t lack in the rock department.  The drummer was captivating to watch as he hammered through some complicated time signatures and beats, which would take years of practice and discipline to even learn.  I imagine that the four musicians in Chon are trained at a collegiate music school.  Being a band from San Diego, California, they certainly had a laidback vibe to go along with it.  The audience was also very attentive throughout their set.

Balance And Composure had a unique stage presence about them.  It was like the frontman was charismatic and awkward at the same time, but it really brought a unique vibe to the band.  The audience wasn’t sure what to make of them in the onset, but they certainly got the audience warmed up for the rest of the night.  The guitar harmonics were atmospheric, the music was just splendid, especially when they played the song entitled “Postcard”.  Balance And Composure has a small post-Christmas east coast run with special guests Wicca Phase Springs Eternal.  Check out the tour dates below!
