Editor’s Note: It was a great time talking with the rising act that incorporates pop and a whole lot of soul into their music. Making music is not only a dream for 13 Crowns, it’s a family affair. 13 Crowns is composed of members that range from 12 to 21 and they consist of Nora on drums, Maikeli on guitar, Abraham on vocals and songwriting, Tihane on vocals and songwriting, Isabella on bass, Heinrich on guitar, and Eve on keyboards. 13 Crowns cite having a positive message in their music along with citing The Fugees, Arrested Development, The Roots, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, and No Doubt as their major influences. They all grew up around success of the Billboard charts, as their parents were in the groups The Jets and Blush, in which The Jets had the hits “Crush On You”, “You Got It All”, “Cross My Broken Heart”, and “Sendin’ All My Love”. Madness To Creation: Congrats on the success of the music video for “Grateful”. Can you take us into that song and what are some obstacles and challenges your band has gone through to get to this point?
Eve: Shooting the video for Grateful was just a fun day. It’s actually a real scenario for us to sleep in and be running late at times. It’s a lighthearted video, but the message of the song itself is more honest and endearing. It struck a chord with us when we recorded it because we have gone through some hard things as a band and as a family. I think everyone has experienced rejection or being let down at some point and along our journey as a band this has happened to us. We’ve had deals fall through, people have let us down, or told us we weren’t good enough. We know that rather that to keep us down, we have to get back up and keep trying. Then we can look at the experience and be Grateful for what we learned.
Madness To Creation: Can you give a message to our readers about not giving up?
Isabella: Don’t give up! A simple smile, with some simple service, is the key to success! Sure, from time to time life might feel like its crumbling apart. But if you can get yourself to smile, and serve someone else, you won’t believe how far it’ll take you! You really can accomplish anything! As long as it’s what you desire, don’t give up, try to laugh at the failures! It will all work out!
Madness To Creation: You worked with Poo Bear and The Audibles on this track, what was it like working with them?
Heinrich: I was too much fun working with Poo Bear and The Audibles. Such a great time and we learned a lot. Poo Bear is so genuine and talented. DJ and Jimmy (The Audibles) are the real deal. We love hanging out with those guys. Such an honor to work with them.
Madness To Creation: What are some blessings and challenges you face working as a family in a band?
Tihane: It’s a blessing and a curse working with family. We know each other so well and of course as siblings we can get in each other’s nerves. We do know how to come together and work things out whenever there’s drama. On the flip side, we mostly have fun together doing what we’ve dreamed of and worked so hard for. We love to travel for shows and when we’re on stage we have little inside comments that we can laugh at afterward. Mostly just being able to share what makes us happy is what we enjoy. Playing music does that.
Madness To Creation: Your parents were in The Jets and Blush, what have they taught you the most about the music biz?
Abraham: Our parents have taught us how to play and sing. My dad is a bass player and did this for years with his family so he knows what it takes to be a band. My mom knows vocals and harmonies and has taught us to sing and arrange stuff. They also have taught us how the business side works so we get that too.
Madness To Creation: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Maikeli: We all have different interest in our spare time. Heinrich and I love basketball and rugby. Bella and Tihane play rugby too, but Tihane is an artist and loves to paint, write and read. Bella likes to help others. She’s always doing laundry or some project around the house. Abraham and Eve love to hang out with friends and watch movies, well we all hang out with friends for sure. It’s fun being in a big family, but we have our own interests too.
Madness To Creation: Where do you see 13 Crowns in 2020?
Eve: In 2020, we hope we are on tour and sharing our music with the world. Recording another album and making friends with more fans. That’s the best part. Getting to know new people and new places.
Madness To Creation: What are the major plans for 13 Crowns for the rest of the year?
Tihane: The rest of this year is about releasing more music. Sometimes the business side of what we do can delay the good stuff and we’re excited to finally release more.
Madness To Creation: What advice do you have for musicians starting out?
Heinrich: My advice is to keep going and never give up. There comes a point when it’s more work than fun, and this is when you have to stay committed. It’s that way with anything. Music is more about hard work than talent. That’s what we’ve learned.
Madness To Creation: What can fans expect from the EP?
Isabella: The EP is great. It’s a collection of songs that we relate to and know that our fans will love. 3 of the songs were written by Tihane and Abraham so that’s cool. It’s taking it back to the soulful sound that we love. We can’t wait to share it.
Madness To Creation: What else would you like to add in regards to 13 Crowns?
Eve: We are honored and humbled that we get to do this. It’s our dream and we hope that 13 Crowns will inspire others to follow their dreams. Work hard, find the right people to help you, and then go conquer the world.
