On April 20th, Red Sun Rising’s latest tour hit Wooly’s in Des Moines, Iowa. The band’s newest release Thread became available via Razor and Tie Records on March 30 and the group has a very full slate of touring ahead of themselves in promotion of this latest venture!
The crowd was treated to an excellent, upbeat performance full of the energy and uniqueness that makes Red Sun Rising one of the top acts in the country! The performance started with the songs “Push” and “Otherside”, two songs off the band’s first major label record Polyester Zeal, which also came out via Razor and Tie in August of 2015. The audience was into the performance immediately, singing every lyric along with lead vocalist Mike Protich. The band then transitioned into songs off Thread, most notably the song “Left for Dead”, which Protich introduced with a very personal message citing how it was a hard song for him to write and perform. The song is one of loss and on the off-chance Protich hadn’t won over any audience members, this memorable performance finalized that!
After “Left for Dead” the band went straight into one of their biggest hits “Amnesia” off the aforementioned Polyester Zeal album, then into current hit “Deathwish” which is rapidly rising on the modern rock hit charts. The band continued their excellent performance by mixing up faster paced songs with more mellow hits, most notably their awe-inspiring cover of Alanis Morrissette’s hit “Uninvited” and lastly, “Imitation”, performing this song almost in the style of a jam band punctuated by a message from Protich asking the audience to be free and to step out of their shells. Predictably yet amazingly, the band left the stage briefly only to return for an encore performance of perhaps their biggest hit “Emotionless”.
Red Sun Rising provides their audience with an excellent live performance. They stick to simply playing their music with just the right amount of messages and audience interaction mixed in. It’s a unique blend of a business-like approach that still provides their fans with excitement, entertainment, and pure bliss. Protich had the audience in the palm of his hand the entire performance while him and backup vocalist/guitarist Dave McGarry demonstrate their fine talents to provide each song its unique sound. Bassist Ricky Miller also provides very strong backup vocals and his onstage theatrics enhance the audience interaction and are a great demonstration of the raw energy the band puts into live performances. Lead guitarist Ryan Williams is constantly at the front of the stage giving the audience what they want while drummer Pat Gerasia is one of the best in the industry. Please support this band and see them live; it will be one of the most memorable performances you can catch!
