Out of Toms River, New Jersey comes a recording artist that goes by the stage moniker of I Am Curbie. In February 2018, I Am Curbie released his debut album of original songs entitled “Better Late Than Forever”.
In this, I Am Curbie showcases the growing indie acoustic singer/songwriter scene that is coming out of the Northeast. It’s like this movement is growing in protest to the big city lights, the stereotypical meatheads of Jersey Shore, and the glitz and glamour. In this, it is the type of music that craves organic over GMOs, the simple things of a porch swing over the constant hustle and bustle of life, and that fresh taste of morning craft brewed coffee over that crap that Starbucks slings. I Am Curbie is certainly spurning on that movement
The intro to “Better Late Than Forever” starts off with the title track. It has nice lush keyboards going in the background and it really shows how exemplary that I Am Curbie is at in the guitar, and it certainly sets the mood for the record. The album goes into a track called “Ego To Feed”. In “Ego To Feed”, I Am Curbie is talking about living a life with no regrets and having this unquenchable desire to succeed. I Am Curbie’s voice is honest, and his guitar picking really adds another dimension to his songwriting abilities. The song really encourages the listener to chase after their dreams and to pursue their passions instead of living that mundane existence.
The song “In The Shade” showcases I Am Curbie’s songwriting and storytelling abilities. Utilizing playing cards as metaphors and similes for life, the guitar and the rhythm will cause toes to tap, fingers to snap, and heads to nod. “I’m living in the shade of my planted seeds”, with this lyric, I Am Curbie showcases to the listener that you reap what you sow in life, and if you planted good seeds, you will bear good fruit, but if you plant bad seeds, you will plant rotten fruit.
In this, this is just some of the exemplary storytelling and tremendous songwriting that I Am Curbie possesses in his music. He knows how to convey serious subject matters and make them such heartfelt and seemingly optimistic songs based on the tones and structure of the music.
