Out of Havant, Portsmouth, United Kingdom comes a duo that promises to bring an eclectic mix of nu-funk to the music world, and that group is Barbudo. Barbudo recently released their retrotastic music video for “Secret Admirer”, and they promise to have the listener put on their dancing shoes, raid the thrift store to find some polyester and bellbottoms and to groove all night long.
Barbudo recently won Record Store Day’s Unsigned Competition for their music video “SXC” and were featured on The Line of Best Fit. As a result of winning this competition, Barbudo had their EP pressed and sold in vinyl and in stores nationwide. The track “Secret Admirer” has been described as a tongue-in-cheek type of song, and according to Harry of Barbudo, “It’s a playful confession of secretly liking something that is deemed uncool by most people. You might not publicly admit to liking it, but beyond judging eyes, you see it for what it is, like listening to Coldplay when you are sad”.
Video Review: I especially enjoy the throwback feel to the video. Anything from the cassette being put into the cassette player, to the font on the lyrics where it has a karaoke type of feel to it, to hanging out at the local record store and the local laundromat. It also has a tongue in cheek vibe with the quirky dance moves with the vocalist singing and dancing in the middle of a game of billiards. The visuals, camera effects, and the karaoke style of the video certainly enhances the song “Secret Admirer”.
Song Review: The bass has so much groove to it that it will cause the listener to break out into a Soul Train line dance. The guitars are full of funk, which will bring the listener back to the yesteryear sounds of groups like Steely Dan, The Average White Band, and even The Isley Brothers. The music is bound to have the listener groove and dance right out of their shoes. I love the atmospheric, spacey vocals that are provided, which certainly makes the song feel like a throwback to where you want to call up Casey Kasem for a “request and dedication”. Madness To Creation will be grooving to this song on repeat as we give it a 9 out of 10 stars. Here is the track below.
