(Album Review) “Living Proof” by State Champs

The phrase “living proof” can take on several meanings.  When I think of “living proof”, I think of situations involving learning from tough lessons or going through challenging obstacles to prove doubters wrong and in order to grow as a person.  I also think of “living proof” as when you’re giving advice of something that is advisable or not advisable, one advises because they’ve been through a situation and are trying to help somebody in that situation so the two people can relate to one another.  “Living Proof” means growth and maturation and pop-punksters State Champs embody that definition that I described with their June 15th release of “Living Proof” via Pure Noise Records.

State Champs got help and mentoring from pop-punk heavyweights Mark Hoppus of Blink 182 and Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low in the co-writing of a couple of songs on this album.  Couple this with the recruiting of John Feldmann to produce this record, and “Living Proof” is certainly a recipe for pop-punk album of the year.

The album is appropriately filled with pop-punk anthems such as the dangerously infectious “Criminal” and the strangely upbeat track “Frozen”, which gets to the heart of the matter in life situations.  There is a song that is an ode to the fans and an ode to all who were responsible for their success in “Crystal Ball”.  This track really covers the theme of obtaining independence through growth.

This album showcases growth and independence, and that feeling that State Champs is ready for the next step to catapult them to the top of the punk mountain.  They proclaim taking leaps of faith to get through the challenges of life in the song “Mine Is Gold”, where the singer sings, “I’m learning how keep burning down the bridges you built by hand”.  In this, the singer talks about how difficult it can be to walk away from that failed relationship, but sometimes you have to cut that person off in order to move forward in life.

This album also showcases that independence and growth that we should be striving for in our lives in the track “Cut Through The Static”.  The lyrical content continues to have that message of independence and embracing change in your life.  “Time Machine” is a lovely ballad that talks about fixing that failed relationship, with quality guitar work and the arrangements providing that mix of angst and a chill atmosphere in the ballad.

In this record, State Champs showcases that they know how to craft a catchy song, now there is some maturation in the music that showcases that State Champs is growing up before our eyes.  With this record, State Champs has become the flag bearer of pop-punk that is as freaking catchy as all get out.  Fans everywhere will cite this record as the one that revived pop-punk, and with that “Living Proof” by State Champs receives 8.5 out of 10 stars from Madness To Creation. • […] State Champs are bringing the Living Proof Tour to North America next month. Kicking off on March 1st in Chicago, IL, the New York Pop-Punkers will be delivering their well-known larger than life stage energy combined with some of their biggest stage productions yet to cities across the United States. Delivering high-voltage versions of tracks from their latest release like fan-favorites “Dead and Gone“, “Our Time To Go” and “Criminal“, the 5-piece band will be supported by Our Last Night, The Dangerous Summer and Grayscale. Multiple cities have already sold out, with all remaining tickets on sale now at The upcoming tour is in celebration of the band’s third studio album, Living Proof. Released last Summer via Pure Noise Records, the 13-track collection is the most ambitious and cohesive work in the band’s catalog. While securing the #9 Top Current Albums, #28 Top 200 and #3 Rock Billboard charting positions, this album has seen impressive praise from fans and press alike. A full list of upcoming North American tour dates can be found below: March 1 – Chicago, IL – House of Blues ** March 2 – Detroit, MI – The Fillmore March 3 – Toronto, ON – Phoenix Concert Theatre** March 5 – Indianapolis, IN – Deluxe March 6 – Cleveland, OH – House of Blues March 8 – New York, NY – Playstation Theater** March 9 – Boston, MA – House of Blues** March 10 – Philadelphia, PA – Theatre of Living Arts** March 12 – Baltimore, MD – Soundstage ** March 13 – Charlotte, NC – The Underground March 14 – Orlando, FL – House of Blues March 15 – Atlanta, GA – The Masquerade March 16 – Louisville, KY – Mercury Ballroom March 18 – Denver, CO – Summit March 19 – Salt Lake City, UT – The Depot March 21 – Seattle, WA – The Showbox March 22 – Portland, OR – Hawthorne Theatre March 23 – Sacramento, CA – Ace of Spades March 24 – Anaheim, CA – House of Blues March 26 – Phoenix, AZ – The Van Buren March 28 – Austin, TX – Scoot In March 29 – Dallas, TX – Granada Theater ** – SOLD OUT While creating Living Proof, State Champs went back to their roots, writing and recording in garages while also collaborating with Mike Green and Kyle Black as they did for Around The World And Back. They didn’t shy away from new experiences either, working with legendary producer John Feldmann (Blink-182, Good Charlotte) for the first time while additional contributions came in the form of writing sessions with Alex Gaskarth (All Time Low) and Mark Hoppus (Blink-182). On an album full of go-for-broke moments, State Champs pushed themselves to new heights without ever forgetting where they came from. Living Proof is a record about coming out the other side those experiences, both triumphant and humbled. That growth is palpable, as State Champs made a record that’s like nothing they’ve done before, but is still an album that only they could ever make. Fans can stream and purchase Living Proof at State Champs is Derek DiScanio (Vocals), Tyler Szalkowski (Guitar), Ryan Scott Graham (Bass), Evan Ambrosio (Drums) and Tony “Rival” Diaz (Guitar).
