Shoegaze/Americana artist Sam Valdez has been riding a wave of momentum with her single “Farther Away”, which has garnered some notoriety by seeing NPR play on KCRW, while mixing shoegaze, Americana, indie, and folk elements to her music with a desert landscape in the background. She has also been featured on Paste Magazine, Consequence of Sound, Indie Shuffle, and Black Book Mag. Sam recently released her latest single entitled “Funeral”, which combines cinematic resonance, while visualizing what the outskirts of Las Vegas look like with that dry desert background, which offers a combination of desolation and a sense of escape all in the same breath.
This track is a clear nod to artists such as Sufjan Stevens, The War On Drugs, and the poetry of Sylvia Plath. It has whimsical and wistful lyrics, Sam’s voice sounds laidback yet is able to express her hopelessness through the various metaphors and connotations offered in the song, and the arrangements sound like a mix of psychedelia with subtle elements of desert rock thrown into the mix, which certainly makes Sam Valdez an eclectic artist.
There are musicians and there are artists. Sam Valdez is certainly both a musician and an artist. She uses eclectic and wistful arrangements to capture the imagery of the message of the song, while utilizing her voice to convey emotions in the music. She is someone that people will be citing her as an influence years down the round because she just does it differently. This song was a wonderful listen, Madness To Creation gives “Funeral” by Sam Valdez a 9/10 stars!
