Editor’s Note: It was great to get to know teenage artist Madison Ryan and having her describe the whirlwind year that she’s having. While still a teenager, Madison Ryan has won the prestigious Emerging Artist contest, which earned her a spot on the massive Summerfest bill, placement on the Billboard Heatseekers chart for her EP “Primary”, and her video for “Paranoid” has garnered over 100,000 hits on YouTube as of press time. Madness To Creation: How was it playing Milwaukee’s Summerfest and winning the Emerging Artist contest?
Madison: SummerFest was absolutely amazing. It was the biggest thing I’ve ever done and the energy was just so intense. Wining the Emerging Artist contest was the icing on the cake to an incredible experience.
Madness To Creation: How did you get on the Emerging Artist Series for Summerfest?
Madison: It really helps to network and know the right people, I think that definitely helped a lot. I believe that the building success of Primary has also played a part in gaining more opportunities such as this one.
Madness To Creation: Congratulations on the chart placement for Billboard Heatseekers, how has the response been to your “Primary” EP?
Madison: The response to Primary has completely exceeded my expectations. Having a debut EP chart was crazy and I never thought that was possible. It’s so cool to know that people are able to relate to my songs and what I’m about.
Madness To Creation: If fans haven’t picked it up yet, how would you describe the EP?
Madison: The EP is me in a nutshell. It describes me perfectly and came from a very honest place. It’s definitely got a little bit of everything.
Madness To Creation: Congratulations on over 100,000 hits on YouTube for “Paranoid”, take us into the video and the song, what is the song talking about?
Madison: Thank you! The song is about the internal struggles that come with anxiety and depression and how sometimes it can feel like you’re going in circles with yourself but you’re really just stuck inside your own head and you have the power to talk yourself out of it.
Madness To Creation: What is a time you felt paranoid?
Madison: I’m paranoid about pretty much everything so it’s a bit of a daily thing for me. I constantly worry about what people think and whether I’m good enough or not and my mind tends to go to the worst case scenario with everything. I’ve learned over time though that a lot of it is all in my head and I have the ability to talk myself out of it as long as I tell myself that I can.
Madness To Creation: Where do we see Madison Ryan 5 years from now?
Madison: 5 years from now I hope that I’ll be closer to becoming the best artist and person I can be. I want to continue to be creating art that people can share with me and relate to.
Madness To Creation: Plans for Madison Ryan for the rest of 2018?
Madison: Lots and lots of writing and just creating. There’s definitely some really cool shows in the works so that’s gonna keep me busy too. I genuinely can’t wait for the rest of this year.
