This could be one of the more interesting releases that I’ve received. A band that wants YOU to have the time of your life and to live each moment no matter what it is that you’re doing. That band is Los Angeles’ own New Beat Fund, who recently released their EP entitled “Chillanthropy”.
“Chillanthropy” could be like philanthropy(which means being charitable in your earnings) in the sense that New Beat Fund wants to be “charitable” in their music in the sense of passing out those excessive chill vibes and providing some fun and a bit of humor into the music. That’s exactly what New Beat Fund members Michael Johnson, Jeff Laliberte, Shelby Archer, and Paul Laliberte want to pass on to the listener along with various “party favors” I’m sure.
The EP starts off with an eclectic “Intro” track that does a nice job of building the anticipation towards the album before seamlessly transitioning into the track “Surf Style”. This song is the ultimate ode to California and the West Coast lifestyle as it’s extremely laidback, so chill that it’ll bring about an Arctic breeze, and the arrangements are a mix of trip-hop and psychedelic. The chorus is so infectious that you might have to see the doctor to see if you contracted something that New Beat Fund mysteriously passed on to you. The track also has bits of reggae thrown into the mix. The instrumental break with the sampling and the guitar adds such a wonderful touch to the music.
The track “Dynamite” has that funk/soul vibe to the music that will cause you to dance with the one you love while you have a drink in your hand. The keys that serve as the backdrop to the verses just causes the listener to sway and to dance like a fool. The chorus is absolutely catchy as well as it proclaims that innocent love while thinking dirty thoughts about that love, but New Beat Fund keeps it classy. And those guitar chords in “Dynamite”, I feel like watching “Good Times” all over again just so I can yell “DYN-O-MITE”!
“Chillanthropy” by New Beat Fund is shockingly refreshing. It is that breath of fresh air that the industry, a band that is NOT afraid to experiment with sounds and arrangements while being completely themselves. It is plain to see why New Beat Fund has shared the stage with the likes of Blink 182, American Authors, Dirty Heads, and Night Riots With summer disappearing like a thief in the night, Madness To Creation has found the soundtrack to the summer for one last roadtrip. Madness To Creation rates this 9 out of 10 stars, if there were three more songs, there would’ve been a 10 star rating. Here is the track listing below.
