The group that brought you “Suicide Notes & Butterfly Kisses”, “The Curse”, and “A Death Grip On Yesterday” is back with somewhat of a new direction that showcases their maturation in their arrangements and growth in their songwriting.  Metal giants Atreyu are unleashing “In Our Wake” via Spinefarm Records on Friday, October 12th to the masses.

As one grows in their maturation, one begins to reflect on life and their purpose in this world.  Without effort, Atreyu conceptualized their personal reflections and purpose in life and unleashed it in their latest offering “In Our Wake”.  In this record, Atreyu is questioning all of the political and spiritual division in Western culture, along with showing positivism towards their children, along with overcoming personal demons and dark points in their life.

The political divisions and political uprisings are certainly addressed in the tracks “Nothing Will Ever Change” and “Blind Deaf & Dumb”.  In these songs, Brandon Saller showcases his prowess in his clean vocals while frontman Alex Varkatzas showcases a maturation in his screams while possessing somewhat more melodic vocals.  The songs sound more anthemic and are also certainly tinged with anger and frustration at American culture in the aforementioned tracks.

Atreyu takes on more of a rock anthem feel in the tracks “Blind Deaf & Dumb”, which the track sounds like they’ve been listening to some Hollywood Undead or Attila where they try out a bit of rapcore during the verses.  While the track has a serious connotation, it showcases a bit of fun and that anthem feel.  “The Time Is Now” sounds like the next WWE or rock stadium anthem which could spring Atreyu back into the mainstream rock fold.

The guitar licks throughout the album showcase more maturation which showcases Atreyu’s increased amount of versatility throughout this album, along with the pulsating rhythm section.  In the track “Terrified”, Atreyu is able to evoke emotion and vulnerability, which seems to enhance the message behind the song.  There is a unique moment in the album with the track “Super Hero”, which features M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold and Aaron Gillespie of Underoath, which allows Atreyu to try their hand at sounding like an opus.

I encourage diehard Atreyu fans to listen to this song with an absolute open mind.  If old-school Atreyu fans think that they’re going back to the days of “The Curse” or “Suicide Notes & Butterfly Kisses”, you simply aren’t going to get that.  What you’re going to get is a band that writes authentic songs and a band that has allowed themselves to naturally evolve as musicians, which allows Atreyu to make some of the most authentic music out there in their genre.  Madness To Creation gives “In Our Wake” a solid 8 out of 10 stars.  Check out the track listing below.
