Editor’s Note: Those that know me know that I love a great songwriter. This woman named Sydney Wright is not only a great songwriter, but has a beautiful personality to boot. She has been through hell and back this year being the victim of a hit and run incident, yet she has persevered to release the wonderful album entitled “Seiche”. Sydney Wright is bound to make herself known beyond the vibrant Austin, Texas music scene with her soulful melodies and her overall knack for writing a great song. Madness To Creation: It’s been great talking to you Sydney, since we’ve been talking about education, what is your take on music education in public schools?
Sydney: I think it should always be included, I probably wouldn’t know how to sing in harmony without choir and why wouldn’t that sort of expression be taught in school along with every other academic.
Madness To Creation: I love the single for “Underwater”, take us into the song and I really like the imagery in the song.
Sydney: I released “Seiche” with the video back in May and “Underwater” came out in October. “Underwater” is about when I wrote it right after I got a smartphone, so you know how your world changes from having a normal phone that takes pictures to looking up directions, and it just changed the game. In the song, we have all of these amenities everywhere with plumbing and AC and how we live in these little boxes, it feels like we are drowning in things that are not real life and are not natural because we have forced ourselves to live in these oxygen tanks. I should probably make a video for that song and make it about the Kevin Costner classic “Waterworld” and everybody loves that!
Madness To Creation: You talked about things that should be natural and organic, what are some things that you enjoy that are natural and organic?
Sydney: I like being in open air. I’m from West Texas, so the sky is just huge there. Being out there in the wind and the sky is really awesome. I’m from West Texas and it took me a really long time to realize that you don’t have to eat a steak for every meal, cutting down on meat is probably really good for you and it makes you feel better, I enjoy eating natural food and doing yoga, and getting in tune with what feels good with your body with that natural stuff too. That’s my relationship to organic things, and feeling in tune with what’s more natural and getting my endorphins from being physically active.
Madness To Creation: What is your favorite type of yoga to do?
Sydney: You know those heated classes that you go to where it’s at a studio, and sometimes it’s with weights, and it’s like P90X. I was in a really bad accident in June and I just now have been able to go to these basic classes, the classes that I would’ve never have gone to before, there’s a different kind of art to going through the motions slower and taking time and having to be patient, I am really digging that about yoga right now.
Madness To Creation: Are you feeling better in terms of your physical health?
Sydney: Yeah! I really can’t wait to be able to run again, but I probably won’t be there for another couple months probably. I am walking free, I am out of the boot, which was kind of voluntary, but mostly because I spilled a bunch of soy sauce on it on accident, so I threw it away, and so now I’m boot-free and doing what I can, it’s really weird to learn patience through this way through trauma and physical limitations, it’s crazy.
Madness To Creation: Do you feel that you have grown as a person from this?
Sydney: I feel like I am in the beginning stages of growth from this experience. But, yes definitely, but I probably know that this is just the tip.
Madness To Creation: I know that you will get through this because I get that vibe from you. You have released “Seiche”, what can fans expect from a loop-pedal pop artist on this record?
Sydney: I feel that it’s an amalgamation of styles, feelings, and stories, and the way that they’re told. I’ve been working on this project for seven years, so this is my “greatest hits” that have never been released, even had one song from high school that is on this album, so that’s pretty crazy. You can expect everything, and the title track is called “Seiche”, which is a French word that means “to sway back and forth”, the song in particular is about transcendence and going through transcending things or people or situations, people talk about using that word when talking about surfing on top of a lake, and also it’s talked about when it comes to violent activities such as seismic activity or atmospheric pressure changes, and so the water just sloshes back and forth, and that’s all it can do to get back to an equilibrium, and that’s why I wrote the song “Seiche”, and that’s why it encapsulates almost every vibe, so that’s why I named the whole album “Seiche”.
Madness To Creation: Is there anything else you would like to add in regards to the project?
Sydney: I’m excited to have released this and to get started in working on the next one. I already have eight songs and I’m just ready to go forward, now I know how it works and I know what I need to do, so the next one should be easier.
Madness To Creation: Any plans for the rest of the year or next year?
Sydney: I don’t plan on touring over Christmas, I’m going to wait until the New Year to do radio promotion and probably tour solo with the loop pedal and just play radio shows and play intimate venues. I heard Air BNB is starting some things up but I want to wait for that.
Madness To Creation: What’s the Air BNB going to look like?
Sydney: Air BNB is supposed to be this really cool intimate house show vibe, I haven’t been to one so I don’t know the experience. I’m going to try to look into that once I start booking in the spring.
