This deathcore/djent band out of Minneapolis, Minnesota has been turning heads in the underground world from the inception. AFTER THE BURIAL has been through a lot from various lineup changes as well as their guitarist Justin Lore’s untimely death due to his battles with schizophrenia. However, they keep pressing on, and in 2016, they released their aptly appropriate album “Dig Deep” via Sumerian Records. This album would also be the final stint for bassist Lee Foral as he left the band after this album.
After The Burial tapped Will Putney(For Today, The Acacia Strain, Body Count) for this record, and this record showcased a newfound focus despite losing Justin Lore. After The Burial certainly had to “dig deep” in this record as they try to make sense of tragedy, make sense of the questions and self-doubt that they had as a band and who After The Burial really is after their loss.
What fans saw with “Dig Deep” was that newfound focus and a newfound purpose with this band as they absolutely took a different direction from deathcore to more djent/hardcore in their sound. That newfound purpose was found in their single “Lost In The Static”, in which the lyrics talk about bending but not breaking and resolving to overcome. This seemed to be a common theme. The gang vocals, the tradeoffs between the growls and the screams, along with the mix of deathcore and djent breakdowns really highlighted this change in After The Burial.
“Mire” has a great midtempo with filthy disgusting guitar riffage going on. It almost felt like After The Burial was trying to exorcise the demons of their past into this one song with the blastbeats in the drums and the fury of the bass played by Lee Foral. “Laurentian Ghosts” are about that border between Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the air horn played in the middle might throw you off at first, but it shows the control of the band to switch gears. By the way, there are few bands besides After The Burial that can utilize an airhorn to include their sick riffage and a nasty breakdown.
It is no secret why this record peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard 200 in United States and at No. 91 on the Australian version of the Billboard 200. This album shows After The Burial at their best. This album reminds me of being at the crossroads in life and you can either fold or push forward with resolve. After The Burial chose the latter instead of the former with this astounding effort. Madness To Creation gives “Dig Deep” 9 out of 10 stars. Here is the track listing below:
