It was a Friday night in Des Moines, Iowa and tucked away in the college district of Des Moines, Iowa is an intimate concert venue called Lefty’s Live Music.  This past Friday night, Shim(which features the original vocalist of Sick Puppies) with special guests Madame Mayhem and Iowa local bands Caught In The Crypt and Alter Within took the stage.  As a side note, you will get to read about Madame Mayhem in a separate interview and review, so be on the look out for that this week!

Caught In The Crypt and Alter Within both showed how Iowa gets down with their brand of local hard rock.  They both did a solid job representing the local scene and exemplifying what it means to be a local band supporting a touring act.  I saw one of the members of Caught In The Crypt offer to help tear down after Madame Mayhem’s set.  Local bands, it is critical that you all support the scene and support the touring bands.  I’m anxious to see what the future is in store for both Caught In The Crypt and Alter Within.

After Madame Mayhem’s set, Shim took the stage.  Shim just seemed to be happy with wiping the slate clean with a fresh start on new music from his new band Shim.  It allows him and the band to explore a new direction creatively and to pursue new avenues in their music.  That was evident as the crowd responded really well to some of their new music with the singles “Hallelujah” and “Crucified”, which the latter is appropriately titled given the nature of Shimon Moore’s career.  Shim also treated the crowd with a few Sick Puppies cuts, including “Riptide”, “You’re Going Down”, and my personal favorite Sick Puppies song “Odd One”.  Although the crowd was small for a Friday night, you could tell that Shim was genuinely appreciative for every fan that bought a ticket to the show.
