Editor’s Note: The Unlikely Candidates is a band that is on many e-zines watch-lists for 2019 due to their stylistic approach to their songwriting along with their infectious stage presence. The band has had placements during the Super Bowl, Indy 500, American Idol, and Fox Sports. They will be sharing the stage with The Brevet, which recently kicked off in Ames, Iowa and will continue tomorrow night(April 11th) at Rough Trade in Brooklyn, New York. Kyle Morris of The Unlikely Candidates sat down with Madness To Creation to discuss their live performances, their pre-show rituals and their latest single entitled “Novocaine”. Madness To Creation: You are on tour with The Brevet and it kicked off in Ames, Iowa. What can fans expect from the tour and what is your favorite thing about playing live?
Kyle: We are going to be playing some new songs and have added a lot of interesting transitional moments to the set. We wanted to make it more dynamic and dramatic. The set feels more like a living, breathing thing now.
Madness To Creation: What are some preshow rituals the band goes through before stepping on that stage?
Kyle: We have our tour manager Evan with us on this run and he always has a pre-show joke that he makes up for the night. It psychs us up and usually elicits a good laugh or amused groans depending the quality. It is a beloved tradition. Other than that, drinking.
Madness To Creation: What is the main reason why you got into music?
Kyle: I think it was one of the few things that really resonated with my soul. I always had a soundtrack to whatever I was doing. I think it also taught me how to live my life a bit. It added colors and hues to my days. It made sense to follow that because it was the only thing that felt important.
Madness To Creation: Favorite place to play and place you are dying to play in the future?
Kyle: I like to play where people like us. Doesn’t matter where it is. Denver is cool. People like to get rowdy, which suits us. I’d like to play in South America. I’ve heard that the crowds are really passionate.
Madness To Creation: Take us into the single for Novocaine, what is the song talking about and what was the most challenging aspect about writing the song?
Kyle: The song is about indulging in a slackery lifestyle. Lamenting it a little bit but sort of accepting that you are a bit of a loser. It was challenging I suppose because there is a lot of me in it, so it was a bit weird to put it out there.
Madness To Creation: “Oh My Dear Lord” has over 13 million streams worldwide, what was the most rewarding thing about that song?
Kyle: That I got to explore so many different sides of my voice and it really change the way that people thought of me as a vocalist. I’ve gotten a lot of love for that falsetto.
Madness To Creation: Tell us about your connection to MLB and Fox Sports!
Kyle: Our label Sony Red is dope and they hook us up with some great sports synchs.
Madness To Creation: One thing that we should learn about you personality wise and musician-wise.
Kyle: I’m a bit of a chameleon and also I get bored easily, so I am always taking chances and trying to find new styles and sounds that fit however I feel at the moment.
Madness To Creation: Giving you the floor to add whatever you want about The Unlikely Candidates.
Kyle: Our band has been through the ringer and I think it’s given us a lot of heart. We also would rather be nowhere else than where we are. I feel like people can see and hear that whenever we play.
