Today, Baroness has released their latest album entitled “Gold & Grey”. Just when you think it’s not possible for this band to outdo themselves, Baroness finds a way to do just that.
“Gold & Grey” starts off with this sonic-charged bass riff that Nick Jost seems to mess with as if he’s a wizard practicing sorcery. The harmonies from John Baizley and Gina Gleason are on point in the opening track “Front Toward Enemy”. I envision the song being that battlecry anthem between good vs. evil and right vs. wrong as the armies collide with one another while Baroness serves as the background to this epic battle.
Baroness showcases that they’re a band that has many weapons in their artillery as they unleash the second track “I’m Already Gone”. In this track, Baroness is just showing off while the rock and metal bands are just screaming “Baroness, that’s not cool at all” at them as they show off their shoegaze elements with hints of psychedelic vibes into the music. The subtle xylophone in the track during the chorus adds so much to the ambiance that is Baroness. How the track fades out towards the end is mind blowing as Sebastian Thomson has those bone-chilling drum fills which makes the music boner inducing.
The drum fills and the guitars in “Seasons” sound so atmospheric and the piano interlude in “Sevens” is just absolutely magical, and how “Sevens” blends into “Tourniquet” is mind numbing as well.
Overall, I was introduced this band at their show in Minneapolis and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I am a novice to Baroness, but I am blown away by “Gold & Grey”. The band is like a drug, the more you listen to this band the more addicted you will become and soon you will become a fiend to get your daily fix of Baroness, at least you don’t need to chop a line or get a syringe to get this fix. This band is one of those rare bands that are in the underground now but I predict years from now people will really get into them kind of like how people are into King Crimson and Pink Floyd today, but they were more underground back then. Get your Baroness fix with “Gold & Grey” today. 9/10 star rating
