It was a rocking summer night as Squeeze with special guests They Might Be Giants rocked the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey. On this amazing night of music, Squeeze brought the “Squeeze Songbook Tour”, and it was a most excellent way to close out summer, as we sit here pouting over the fact that the fall weather is right around the corner.
The band that is known for modern rock classics such as “Pulling Mussels(From The Shell)” and “Satisfied”, showed the Asbury Park audience why they have been around since 1974. Ranging from Chris Difford’s impeccable songwriting and his voice to Glenn Tilbrook’s work on vocals and guitars, the band turned up their classic sound to 11 with their “Songbook” of hits and songs that they love.
Squeeze is one of those groups that as you hear their songs throughout the evening, that you either didn’t know that they sang that song or that it brings waves of nostalgia to your brainwaves. The arrangements just flowed through the set, especially when Stephen Large did his magic behind the keyboards for their hit “Pulling Mussels(From The Shell)”. The crowd just danced until their hearts were content. Difford and Tilbrook immediately comes to mind when we think of Squeeze, however, we must recognize the impeccable arrangements done with the rest of Squeeze, whether it was the second drummer in the back that also played the bongos or Yolanda Charles on the bass.
Songs such as “King George Street” made you want to find someone to dance with. The music of Squeeze just warms the cockles of a person’s heart. If you want a night filled with hits, love and passion then I suggest taking an evening off and checking out Squeeze live! Here is some photos with photography credit going to Kim Casper of Garden State Band Connection. Fans can check out the setlist here.
Also, as a recent surprise, the legendary Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters joined Squeeze behind the kit on their classic hit “Black Coffee In Bed” during Squeeze’s set at the Bourbon & Beyond Festival in Louisville, Kentucky. Squeeze has been touring the USA with the American leg of the “Squeeze Songbook Tour”. The tour continues October 13th in U.K. and Ireland.
