Double Vision: Then And Now celebrates the incredible live performance from both incarnations of the classic rock band, Foreigner. Sharing the same stage for the first time in their 40-year history, it’s a truly unforgettable performance uniting their fans, members and, most importantly, the music. Double Vision was the bands platinum selling album in 1978 and it’s not surprising as defining tracks Cold as Ice, Urgent and Jukebox Hero featured on it.
This unique performance was filmed at Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, Mount Pleasant, Michigan, USA. Their show begins with the iconic Cold as Ice. The catchy piano rhythm is instantly recognisable along with the unforgettable lyrics “you’re as cold as ice, willing to sacrifice our love”. Their performance is interesting as the song is moved down into a lower key from the original. The track still has the same powerful effect and the key change suits the vocals very comfortably. The Flame Still Burns sees their set list take it slower with this emotional track. Foreigner are well known for their energetic rock tracks with catchy choruses and guitar solos but it’s great see them include the slower, more intimate tracks. The reaction from the audience, audible on the performance, shows their great love of this track. It’s not long however before Foreigner get the audience back to rocking out. Their performances of classics Urgent and Jukebox Hero raise the roof. It’s incredible how these classic rock anthems have stood, and continue to stand, the test of time.
Feels Like The First Time receives an audible introduction from the crowd of the live show. It’s one of those ‘feel good’ tracks with instantly identifiable riff and an uplifting chord sequence. The motifs of the era, including guitar licks throughout the second verse, add little touches that really enhance to the sound. The sound quality of the live performance is fantastic. A few minor changes, such as key changes as mentioned earlier with respect of Cold as Ice, have been made but ultimately Foreigner have remained true to their original sound. The iconic guitar tones, keys and synths sounds bring to life the songs despite being originally recorded 40 years ago. Double Visions rocking intro riff is energetic and has a powerful feel of movement which continues throughout the track. It’s a great example of their use of dynamics. The chorus feels like it drops suddenly from the verse as the distorted guitars take a back seat. This seemingly, calmer chorus seamlessly breaks the continuous motion of the chorus without the energy of the overall track being lost entirely. It also gives space for the individual instruments to shine with a variety of melodies, rhythms and sounds occupying the same section of the song.
Foreigner remain as prominent today as they have over the past 40 years. Their music is still greatly loved and played by fans, both old and new. Foreigner’s music continues to feature in films, television and other forms of media showing how timeless it is despite advancements in the music and media industries. Their sound is instantly recognisable and holds a prominent place in classic rock.
