On July 2nd, New Zealand pop/singer-songwriter Eden Iris released a remix version of her single “Dark Sunday Dream” via major digital streaming platforms.  The remix was done by film composer David Norland.  This song is such a beautiful song about how sometimes it’s always darkest before dawn.  Here are her lyrics below:

Who are you gonna spend your dark Sunday with
Or will you wait alone as your dark thoughts unfold
Will it feel like the end when no one understands
What will set free from your dark Sunday dream

Grey clouds in the sky
Dead leaves on the ground
It’s a new world to discover when Dark Sunday comes around
The rivers in your eyes
Run down into the light
A new world waiting for you on the other side

What colors will you see in your Dark Sunday Dream
Will they all be black and white when the sadness does arrive
Some days you feel like your on top of the world
you feel like nothing at all could ever drag your heart down
And then you’ll wake and feel so cold inside your bones,
so far from being found

now what, what will set you free
from this dark sunday dream
what will set you free
I know you’re not where you wanna be
And sometimes life can seem
like one long dark sunday dream

Grey clouds in the sky
Dead leaves on the ground
It’s a new world to discover when dark Sunday comes around
The rivers in your eyes
Run down into the light
A new world waiting for you on the other side  – Eden Iris

Now let’s take a look at the chorus, which is highlighted in bold.  Sometimes life is always the darkest before dawn.  When it feels pitch black in your life or when you feel like you’re at the end of your rope, that’s the part where we need to realize that things get better.  Life can weigh us down especially during this pandemic, civil unrest around the world, or just the mere uncertainty of what the next day is going to look like.  I know that I’ve felt more anxious and more vulnerable during these times.  Here are some helpful things to help you get through the “Dark Sunday Dream” that Eden Iris talked about in her song:

  1.  Shut off your phone.  Step away from social media or your favorite apps that you use on your phone.  Although we are more connected than ever before, we are more disconnected than ever before.
  2.  Shut off the television.  The media paints nothing but doom and gloom stories to make it feel like society and everything is hopeless.  Check out news sites such as “Good News Network” to have heartwarming news stories.
  3.  Volunteer or get active.  Develop an exercise regiment, even if it’s something like just going for a walk in your neighborhood.  Find a cause to believe in.

The reason why I’m doing the single reviews a little bit differently is to give you, the reader, a little bit of hope and encouragement in your day.  We all have our songs that we go to when we feel down on our luck, and music, and sometimes our faith helps us get through each day.  We need our music to help get us through.  Studies have shown that listening to music calms us down and lowers our blood pressure.  I want to encourage you to shut off your phone or television, and check this song out!
