Album Review–Danko Jones Power Trio

On August 27, Danko Jones Power Trio via Sonic Unyon, the band’s 10th studio album.  Many bands mix a classic sound with modern day riffs, yet fewer do it better than Danko Jones and Power Trio may be their best work yet! Many musicians have produced music based on the great change in the world over the last 18 or so months.  While the scathing track  “Ship of Lies’’ Danko Jones’ attack on the constant misinformation in the world, the band stays true to the music that has shaped their identity over the last 25 years.  The opener “I Want Out” exemplifies perfectly the abundance of energy the band puts into all of their work.  The album contains several songs that give Danko Jones’ take on the everlasting pursuit of love.  “Blue Jean Denim Jumpsuit”, “Saturday”, “Good Lookin”, and “Danger...

EP Review: “Timeless” by OF MICE & MEN

On February 26, metal giants Of Mice and Men released a three-song EP titled “Timeless.”  This work is part of a larger process that will result in the band’s seventh full-length album being released by the end of 2021.  Between now and then, two more EPs will accompany “Timeless.”  This work also marks the band’s first release under SharpTone Records.   Prior to the release of “Timeless” there were several social media teases released by the band and a promise to embark on a new era of OM&M.  However, from the first guitar riffs of the title track, there is no mistaking who the creator of this work is...and that is not a bad thing!  Powered in large part by vocalist Aaron Pauley, Of Mice and Men have continued to refine what is a unique sound in the metal industry and I view this w...

(Album Review): “Death by Rock and Roll” by THE PRETTY RECKLESS

On February 12, The Pretty Reckless released their fourth studio album titled Death by Rock and Roll via Fearless Records.  The band is composed of Taylor Momsen (Vocals), Ben Phillips (Guitar), Jaime Perkins (Drums), and Mark Damon (Bass).  This amazing work is the result of many trials and tribulations over the last several years.  The band landed a prestigious gig in 2017 opening for Soundgarden, but it was of course during this tour Chris Cornell took his own life.  Less than a year later, Kato Khandwala, a close friend and producer for the band, died in a motorcycle accident.  This was a very dark time for the band and it wasn’t until late 2018 before members started recording again.  The result, however, is an album that will truly stand the test of time and go down as a signature wo...

(EP Review) “Static” by BLACKTOP MOJO

On May 29, Blacktop Mojo released a four-song EP titled Static.  The band, formed in 2012, is known for combining elements of classic rock (an almost blues sound) with elements of modern rock and grunge.  This range of sounds is evident on this short yet powerful effort! The EP opens with “The End” which details a seemingly ruined life and the protagonist is trying to figure out how he or she got to that point.  This is typical of the band’s lyrical style.  Blacktop Mojo writes songs of life that the listener can easily relate to.  “The End” is full of blistering riffs and the lead singer Matt James emotional vocals are showcased extensively here.  Please check out the official lyric video for this potential hit here: “Watch Me Drown” is a slower version of the opening song.  Jam...

(Album Review) “Mother” by IN THIS MOMENT

On Friday, March 27th metal band In This Moment released their seventh album Mother via Atlantic/Roadrunner Records!  The much-anticipated followup to 2017’s Ritual, Mother takes the listener on a philosophical journey that demonstrates the stylistic evolution the band has been on ever since their inception in 2005.  In This Moment--comprised of lead singer Maria Brink, co-founder and lead guitarist Chris Howorth, bassist Travis Johnson, guitarist Randy Weitzel, and drummer Kent Dimmel--continues to demonstrate why it is one of the dominant forces on the metal scene through this work! After an intro, the album gets into a haunting rendition of the Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle.”  An established band starting an album with a cover can be a risky move, but In This Momen...

(Album Review) “Monomania” by THE WORD ALIVE

On February 21, metalcore band The Word Alive released their sixth studio album MONOMANIA via Fearless Records. The quartet consists of vocalist Telle Smith, guitarist Tom Pizzuti, guitarist Zach Hansen, and drummer Matt Horn.  In regards to this newest creation, Smith says, “We wanted to do something different and push the boundaries of what we are capable of.  We’re really taking risks.” The Word Alive accomplished this by producing an album that will go down as one of the top ones of 2020! I was instantly hooked with the intro to the title track “MONOMANIA.”  The struggles one may encounter with mental health is the primary theme of this album and vocalist Telle Smith delivers a powerful vocalization of this struggle right away when he sings, ‘Does anybody even care? Is anybody liste...

On January 31st, Sevendust guitarist Clint Lowery launches his solo debut album God Bless The Renegades.  The album is a ten-track masterpiece and is a result of a career-long process Lowery always wanted to see produced.  He dug into this work throughout 2019 and is now finally ready to release the milestone of his career. “Putting this under my name was a big decision.  There’s an empowerment to it; I’m glad I did it, because it’s me,” Lowery states through the press release announcing this album.  Many fans will already be familiar with some work as the debut single “Kings” was released November 1st and then the title track “God Bless the Renegades” followed three weeks later.  Often when members of famous bands try breaking out on their own, the solo work sounds like an extension of...

(Album Review) “I Am” by TOOTHGRINDER

On October 11, prog/post-hardcore band Toothgrinder released their third full-length album entitled I AM.  The title is an appropriate relation to the band’s message of confidence with where they are both professionally in their careers and personally.  Vocalist Justin Matthews comments that the album is about “making peace with myself. So, the mantra just seemed very fitting for the title as it’s a guided meditation I’ve used to get me through a lot.”  The rest of the band is comprised of Jason Goss (rhythm guitar), Wills Weller (drums), and Johnuel Hasney (lead guitar and backing vocals). I AM truly builds on the work of these talented musicians and solidifies Toothgrinder’s spot amongst the truly unique acts of the current music scene.   The album begins with the explosive “The S...
