(Album Review) “Slain in the Spirit” by NECRONAUTICAL

Slain in the Spirit is the latest offering from extreme blackened metal outfit, Necronautical. The dark quartet, from Manchester in the UK, unleash utterly demonic sounds. The band delve into the dark abyss exploring all aspects of life, death and everything in-between. Necronaut (noun); derived from the Greek words nekros (νεκρός), meaning "corpse" or "dead", and nautes (ναύτης), meaning "explorer". The word refers to a person who experiments with near-death experience in order to explore the underworld. Each track delivers a different style and mood. 'Occult Ecstatic Indoctrination' combines intense heavy instrumentation along with a soaring, ethereal chorus to produce an epic, gothic atmosphere. This track also experiments with light and dark tones switching between contrasting se...

(Album Review) “Blood in the Water” by FLOTSAM AND JETSAM

'Blood In The Water' IS the fourteenth studio album from thrash metal legends Flotsam & Jetsam. It's an epic release from start to finish and is clear Flotsam and Jetsam have no intention of slowing down their career. With the events of the past year, the band have found there is still plenty left to say. Vocalist ERIC “AK” KNUTSON comments, “We’ve seen our fan base increasing, and we’ve seen the response to the last two albums getting louder and louder. We have some of the most committed and crazy fans in the world. We charted higher on our last album than at any point in our career. Maybe our career path will run similar to Motorhead’s, who although was always considered iconic, didn’t really break through in a big way until later in their career. We feel our time is now . . .” sa...

(Album Review) “Created From Filth And Dust” by LILITH CZAR

Listening to an artist's debut album is always interesting - this is their starting point and I know that they will only grow from this release. The standard of debut releases can be incredibly high, and Lilith's album 'Created From Filth And Dust' falls into this category for me. The album explores themes of rebirth and reinvention and is clearly very personal. The lyrical content, musicality and production are all of a fantastic quality and present a wonderfully empowering release. The alluring introduction of 'Feed My Chaos', with everything from shredding guitars to soothing piano, sets a fantastic tone for the album. The instant, infectious energy of 'King',  and the beautiful ballad of 'Lola' are just a couple of examples of the fantastic journey this album goes through. 'In My He...

(Album Review) “X” by ARTILLERY

Danish thrash metallers Artillery have hit a huge milestone reaching their tenth album - the aptly named 'X'. Their career begin in the mid-1980s and the band soon established themselves in the thrash movement. After almost forty years, the metallers have faced some difficulty with the loss of guitarist - and Stützer’s brother - Morten Stützer in 2019. 'X' is the first album writing without Morten but with their new guitarist Kræn Meier, who has performed live with Artillery since 2017. “We wanted to have the typical Artillery trademarks, like the riffs and hook lines in the usual combination together with aggression and melody. We always try to combine melodic thrash metal with elements from the heavy sounds of the 70s and the 80s, and this time with new elements in some of the songs,”...

(Single Premiere) “MYSTERIUM” by WRECHE

Premiering on the 26th April 2021, 'MYSTERIUM' is the new track from Wreche - "Where black metal and classical music vie for privilege, hope, and death in smog laden basin of sunt" 'MYSTERIUM' lands ahead of the new album 'All my dreams came true' releasing on the 14th May 2021. A colossal masterpiece, this album sees John Steven Morgan working alone - more unhinged, personal, and varied than on Weche’s 2017 eponymous debut w/ drummer Barret Baumgart. At once horrifying and beautiful, All my dreams came true further binds genres like a particle accelerator - an absolutely devastating collision, a nebulaic nightmare of spackled iridescent light and void-lusting despair. Morgan’s brilliant songwriting and narrative structure, equally matched by his virtuosic performances on every instrume...

(EP Review) “Paint The Sky With Blood” by BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT

Led by the extremely talented Alexi Laiho, newly formed BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT was about to become the striking successor to legendary metal band CHILDREN OF BODOM. Their sonic plans were massive – including an EP release in the spring followed by a full-length album later in the year. The EP, Paint The Sky With Blood (out April 23 via Napalm Records) was meant to be the beginning of an exciting new chapter, that ended far to soon. This three track EP packs a punch, to say the least. It does feel strange hearing these three tracks with the knowledge that more was planned to come in the future. I hope fans of Alexi Laiho can take some comfort in hearing this new release which stands as a powerful tribute to him. It is a powerful melodic death sound that greets you - or should I say hits...

(Album Review) “Omega Kaleid” by Gizmachi

Founded in 1996 (oh my goodness they're the same age as me!) Gizmachi grew to make a name for themselves among the local Orange County, NY, hardcore/metal scene. The band have an interesting backstory. The band caught the eyes and ears of Slipknot percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan and signed to his label, Big Orange Clown (a subsidiary of Sanctuary Records) for the release of their debut, The Imbuing, in 2005. From 2005-2006, GIZMACHI spent time on the road supporting The Imbuing, including high profile festivals such as Ozzfest and Rock AM Ring in Europe before going on an extended 16-year hiatus. Following their break, the band GiZmAcHi have returned with a powerful new album in 'Omega Kaleid'. Opening with 'Winter', I'm greeted with a clean guitar lead and soaring vocal line. It's i...

(Album Review) “A History of Nomadic Behavior” by Eyehategod

'A History of Nomadic Behavior' is the new record from hardcore/doom-slingers Eyehategod. This album lands following their 2014 self titled album, and a lot of touring around the US and Asia with bands such as OFF!, Negative Approach, Sheer Terror, Corrosion of Conformity, AntiSeen and the Obsessed. 'A History of Nomadic Behavior' dives straight in with angsty vocals, heavily distorted guitars and an all-round explosive energy. By merely taking a look at the track titles for this album the vibes and themes are very clear and also, I think, quite relatable for many in our troubled times. The fast energy and explosive power of aggressive emotions is what quite a lot of people need right now. This album has been eagerly awaited by their fans, and now is as good a time as ever to unleash so...
