(EP Review) “Spectra” by COURAGE MY LOVE

I am late to the party.  The kind where the record stops when you walk in late to that party and everyone is looking at you.  Such is the case with me with the May 1st EP release of indie synth/punk darlings Courage My Love entitled "Spectra". To paraphrase, the definition of "Spectra" comes from the word "spectrum" where any ray of light can show from low intensity to intense brightness over a range of energies.  In this case, this album is a spectra or a mood based on the various energies that it possesses.  It opens up with some saccharine goodness with "Teenagers", the guitars and harmonies reflect the mood of this song, where it encourages the listener to be themselves instead of being like that cover model in that magazine. Then, the EP takes on an 80's kind of new wavey/Te...

We Nerd Out Vol. 49: Liz Mauritz and Zach Duarte of GOLD STEPS Converses with “The Don” of THE DON’S HIT LIST PODCAST on Goosebump Moments and Coping with Anxiety

Contributor's Note: Episode 27 of The Don's Hit List Podcast is now available with Liz Mauritz (Vocals/Lyricist) and Zach Duarte (Lead Guitars) of the Pop Punk band Gold Steps. Liz and Zach journey with me through their band's music collection as we discuss the goosebump moments in their songs. Liz and Zach discuss their songwriting process. How the song "Toughen Up" which was the first song they wrote together as a band, was inspired by a relationship Liz was in where there were red flags and other girls coming up to her saying, "We have to warn you..." and then share their experiences. This is a lesson for all girls in regards to relationships. Liz also shares her advice on people dealing with anxiety and what has helped her through some difficult times. We also discuss their ...

Mercedes Arn-Horn of COURAGE MY LOVE Converses with Madness To Creation on “Remission”, Mental Health and Going DIY on Upcoming Record!

Editor's Note:  It was such a blast to be once again talking to one of the loveliest souls in the music industry in frontwoman/guitarist Mercedes Arn-Horn of Courage My Love.  In this interview, she took a break from the studio to be chatting with Madness To Creation about the upcoming album, their recent video/single release for "Remission", along with her mental health and working out.  I am anxious to see what is in store for this band in 2019.  Sadly, they had to recently cancel their East Coast run with Potty Mouth due to circumstances beyond their control, but they are playing Renegade Fest in Pontiac, Michigan this summer.  If you get a chance to see them live, please take a night off of work and go do it!  Fans can find Courage My Love at the following locations: www.facebook.co...

(EP Review) “Beloved” by New Lingo

Honestly, I've never listened to this band before.  I was sitting at Spicoli's with my friends and they were performing providing direct support for Smile Empty Soul and Flaw on the "Flawless Smile Tour" at Spicoli's Grill in Waterloo, Iowa.  Their rhythms, vocals, and arrangements immediately grabbed my attention.  I immediately picked up a copy of the EP and threw a five-dollar bill into their tip jar, and popped the "Beloved" EP into my car.  Let me tell you, what an engaging listen this EP is! "Beloved" was released April 28th of this year with the help of Nick Ingram(Courage My Love, City Lights, Hawthorne Heights) at Capitol House Studio in Ohio and Kris Crummett(Sleeping With Sirens, Issues, Dance Gavin Dance) helped with the mixing and mastering of the EP.  The band is composed ...

Tobi Duncan of Trash Boat Discusses His Puppy and Vans Warped Tour with Madness To Creation!

Editor's Note:  UK Alternative Rock band Trash Boat has recently wrapped up the Vans Warped Tour and have also released their album entitled "Crown Shyness" via Hopeless Records.  Madness To Creation had literally a few minutes to prepare for this interview, so prepare for this off-the-cuff conversation with vocalist Tobi Duncan.  Fans can find this sensational band at the following locations: www.facebook.com/TrashBoatUK www.trashboat.co.uk www.twitter.com/TrashBoatUK www.instagram.com/TrashBoatUK Madness To Creation:  Your band, Trash Boat, has recently released "Crown Shyness" via Hopeless Records, how has the response been thus far? Tobi:  Well, our data signal doesn't really work too well out here, so I haven't really had a chance to dive into the depths of the Inter...

The Musician’s Tribune Vol. 9: “From All Time Low to Transform Space: How Vans Warped Tour Impacted My Career” by Maggie Schneider

Editor's Note:  There is something to be said about that singer-songwriter who takes multiple influences and creates it into his/her own brand.  That is what Atlanta native Maggie Schneider certainly did as she is carving her own niche into the music world.  Maggie's career began to launch as she found herself sharing the stage with the likes of State Champs, Jonny Craig, Like Pacific, and Courage My Love, and her EP "Tinted Glasses" is out now!  I would venture to say that she never imagined playing at Vans Warped Tour, let alone being produced by Rian Dawson of All Time Low, which she considers as one of her all time favorite bands.  In this edition of "The Musician's Tribune", you will read about how the band All Time Low came full circle in Maggie Schneider's life and career.  In the m...

“Badtimes” by FLOODS, infectious like crazy!

Out of Louisville, Kentucky is a trio known as FLOODS that will bring you sexy pop sensibilities, along with seduction that sounds innocent yet it sounds like they're hiding something as a result of it.  On February 23rd, FLOODS dropped their record entitled "Badtimes" via InVogue Records. FLOODS is composed of Emily Prather, Sam Stamper, and Jake Snyder, and they would accurately describe their music as music that can make people dance to.  Madness To Creation would soundly agree to them. "Badtimes" starts off with the title track, which brings in an electronic drum beat, and I picture Emily in a smoky club, and it is a great seductive midtempo track, in which the listener immediately notices how infectious the sound of FLOODS can be.  It is atmospheric, with hints of acid pop, and a hi...

Madness To Creation Sounding Off: Looking Back on 2017: Various Artists Reflect on Chris Cornell with Madness To Creation!

Editor's Note:  I remember driving in my car on my way to my full time job and Soundgarden came on the radio.  It was the song "Outshined" and I didn't think anything of it, I love being surprised when I hear a damn good song on the radio.  I forget about my stresses for those few moments and prepare to sing my heart out to a song that defined my teenage angst years.  Then, the radio DJ for Rock 108 came on and announced that Chris Cornell was found dead in a hotel room bathtub.  I froze.  Tears suddenly streamed down my face and I literally pulled over to the side of the road and wept.  I couldn't believe the news.  I remember all the tributes and most importantly the artists all seemed somewhat broken when we brought up Chris Cornell.  When I interview, I don't try to get the dirt, I foc...

Madness To Creation’s Frisson Awards! Part One: Frisson Award for Incredible Record of the Year!

Editor's Note:  I wish I could afford an awards show and this is something I might do for next year, is actually have trophies made and deliver them to the bands/recording artists to make them "official".  But with a shoestring budget, we're doing what we can to recognize some powerful records and acts.  There have been so many records that have been wonderful in the year 2017 that I'm looking forward to seeing what 2018 has in store for the music world.  There have been records that we see the breakthrough of bands, records that have jumpstarted careers and there have been records that we begin to see the decline and inevitable decay of bands.  Here are the five awards for the Frisson Award for Record Of The Year! 5.  "Revolution On Repeat" by Troubled Horse. My thoughts:  This record...
