(Album Therapy Reviews): “Horizons/East” by THRICE

One of the most mindblowing bands I have ever feasted my ears upon, Thrice, has released their latest record entitled "Horizons/East" via Epitaph Records.  Thrice once again writes the playbook on how to create a record that sounds enormous, different, and all the while not straying too far from the path for the Thrice diehards out there. "The Color of the Sky" about knocked me out of my chair when drummer Riley Breckenridge lays down his insane drum fills, and "Scavengers" just sounds insanely heavy with the thick guitar riffs by Teppei Teranishi and influential frontman Dustin Kensrue.  The instrumental break in "Scavengers" takes the listener to a whole new dimension.  "Buried In The Sun" tells the tale of the atrocities of war from the perspective of the refugee, making it highly em...

(EP Review) “Prey For Me” by THE COLD YEAR

In 2017, we introduced our readers to a bastard-jazz trio out of Salt Lake City, Utah called THE COLD YEAR with their debut EP entitled "Praise The Goat".  Now, The Cold Year are becoming seasoned veterans in their craft with their upcoming follow-up release entitled "Prey For Me". The Cold Year is composed of Matthew Skaggs on vocals/guitar, Mitch Shepherd on bass, and Josh Cannon on drums.  Based on their eclectic arrangements, they take elements from The Doors, Tom Waits, jazz, and even a touch of Thrice(Beggars album era of Thrice), and throw in some irreverence and create a concoction that balances darkness and lightheartedness in the same token. "Prey For Me" starts off with "Exordium".  If you look up in Webster's Dictionary", exordium means, "beginning or commencement", I wou...

(Concert Review) ROCKSTAR DISRUPT FESTIVAL featuring ATREYU, THRICE, THE STORY SO FAR, CIRCA SURVIVE & THE USED Live at PNC Banks Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey (7/6/2019) Part 2 of 2

On July 6th, the Rockstar Disrupt Festival commenced at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey.  Previously, we talked about some of the openers, now we're talking about the mainstays.  The Used, Thrice, The Story So Far, Circa Survive, and Atreyu all rocked the festival in front of thousands of people.  Atreyu took the stage. Atreyu has been the modern hard rock comeback story as of late.  They're one of the pioneers of the metalcore genre with their innate ability to mix screams with clean vocals.  I must say that the drummer Brandon Saller is one of the most talented musicians I have seen in sometime.  He is able to wail on his vocals while destroying it behind the drum kit.  They got their set started with their summer rock anthem "The Time Is Now", and the fans were treate...

(Concert Review) ROCKSTAR ENERGY DISRUPT FESTIVAL Part One of Two Live at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey (7/6/2019)

On July 6th, the inaugural Rockstar Energy Disrupt Festival took place live at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey.  The festival featured some amazing bands from the punk, alternative, and metal genres, and this year's festival featured the legendary The Used, along with the comeback kids Sum 41 and Atreyu, and also featured mainstays such as Memphis May Fire and Thrice. I didn't know what to expect with this being the inaugural festival.  I was expecting more people here, but with it being an inaugural festival, I'm hoping that it grows into a bigger festival next year.           Juliet Simms took the stage.  She was a great opener for the crowd.  In a roundabout way, she reminded me if Halestorm did garage rock in a way.  Her voice is impecc...

(Album Review) “Bent Shoulders” by God Alone

The unique project God Alone, headed by The Devil Wears Prada frontman Mike Hranica, released "Bent Shoulders" via Rise Records on July 20th.  Let me tell you, it is a definite and welcome contrast from The Devil Wears Prada material. This is a project that seemed to be simmering for quite a period of time.  Throughout the years, The Devil Wears Prada fans saw the evolution of the band, which many saw welcoming and some saw confusing.  Some fans have wondered whether or not The Devil Wears Prada maintained their Christian roots and other fans have wondered whether the band has became either heretics in the faith or committed apostasy.  One thing is certain, Mike Hranica is a philosopher and a thinker in a world where a lot of music seems so shallow and empty to listen to. God Alone is wh...
