On March 22nd, indie/post-hardcore/shoegaze band PARTING GIFT released their EP entitled “Ensom” via Fearless Records.  In this record, they have taken those feelings of “ensom”, bottled it up, shook up the bottle, and let the contents spill into their lyrics and arrangements.

Forming out of Manchester, United Kingdom in 2017, Parting Gift takes what they have learned from various genres, including black metal, and began penning lyrics that feel anxious and uneasy and wove those lyrics into the dark, yet atmospheric arrangements in “Ensom”.

“Ensom” is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as “experiencing loneliness”.  Parting Gift takes that definition and spills their lyrics and arrangements into atmospheric compositions throughout this record.  “Without Sin” and “Pale” feel anxious, yet there is a sense of calmness in the arrangements.  These songs talk about constantly living up to another person’s seemingly impossible expectations and feeling lost in a sea of people.  The arrangements are soaring but instead of soaring into the beautiful blue sky, you’re soaring into an abyss.  “Cold” feels ominous, gutwrenching, and strange, yet that is Parting Gift’s intention in the layout of the EP.

Parting Gift already does a fantastic job of sustaining the listener’s attention due to their abilities to pay attention to detail in their arrangements and they allow you to feel the anguish and anxieties that they have experienced in their lives.  With “Ensom”, Parting Gift has created a painful picture of what it’s like to experience loneliness and anxiety.  This band needs to be on our radar as soon as possible with an 8 out of 10 star effort.  Here is the track listing:

  1.  Pale
  2.  3:07(Moonlight)
  3.  Without Sin
  4.  Cold
  5.  Ensom
