(Mental Health Moments) Juneteenth: A Reading and Interpretation of General Order No. 3 by Union General Gordon Granger

Recently, President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth to be a federal holiday.  Today should be an important day for all Americans as we recognize today to continue the struggle for a more perfect Union, to reflect and to become more educated on how we can be involved in our communities and in the struggle for racial equality.   It is a remember that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and no one is free until we are all free.  June 19th, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 at Ashton Villa in Galveston, Texas.  General Order No. 3 stated the following: The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with the proclamation of the United States, all slaves are free. (Mental Health Moments) “Music and its Importance in Times of Crisis”

Music is a very interesting phenomenon of the human brain and it has a profound effect on our emotional and mental state. We play music during moments of celebration, mourning, relaxation, reflection, and every other emotional state. The sound of music seems to be able to comfort us in ways that few other things can.  While this is all true, scientists and researchers are still looking at exactly how our brains interact with music and what it is about a particular arrangement of sounds that has captivated cultures all throughout history. One interesting sociological fact that many researchers have pointed out is that rich musical traditions developed independently in cultures that had no contact with one another. This fact suggests that music is something innate to the human mind and...

(Mental Health Moments) “Mosaic” by SHAPING THE LEGACY, Drum Playthrough by Juan Hinojosa!

Editor's Note:  This was fantastic to listen to.  Drumming and playing an instrument can be so therapeutic.  There are times where just letting out your aggression on a drum kit can be so soothing, as Juan Hinojosa shows here in this drum playthrough for the song "Mosaic" by Shaping The Legacy.  The music takes you on a journey through the many colors and the many abstract aspects of life.  One moment you're feeling like the sky is the limit and the next moment, you're feeling like the world just came crashing down on top of you.  "Mosaic" is about expressing those feelings and doing what it takes to rise above the challenges and obstacles of life.   Juan Hinojosa is a session drummer out of San Antonio, Texas.  For drumming lessons and sessions, please email Juan at pbiddles10@gmail.co...

On July 2nd, New Zealand pop/singer-songwriter Eden Iris released a remix version of her single "Dark Sunday Dream" via major digital streaming platforms.  The remix was done by film composer David Norland.  This song is such a beautiful song about how sometimes it's always darkest before dawn.  Here are her lyrics below: Who are you gonna spend your dark Sunday with Or will you wait alone as your dark thoughts unfold Will it feel like the end when no one understands What will set free from your dark Sunday dream Grey clouds in the sky Dead leaves on the ground It’s a new world to discover when Dark Sunday comes around The rivers in your eyes Run down into the light A new world waiting for you on the other side What colors will you see in your Dark Sunday Dream Will they ...

(Mental Health Moments) An Education on Juneteenth

Today is Juneteenth and it is a celebration for African-Americans to come together to celebrate the end of slavery.  There will be music, food and fireworks on this day, which I challenged myself to delve deeper into our cultural history in America.   In this essay on Juneteenth, I will be discussing the origins of this day, how African-Americans celebrated it throughout American history and what people are doing today to engage in the celebration.  There will be old African spirituals highlighted throughout this essay. The importance of Juneteenth is to celebrate this pivotal role in American history.  It is a day that paved the way for further struggles for African-Americans that still continue to this day from Reconstruction to the Jim Crow laws to the struggle for the 1964 and 1968 ...
